COLT

I was on the couch watching an early season baseball game. It was snowing out–yup, even in May–and it was a rare Sunday we both had off at the same time. The scent of coffee still hung in the air from our lazy morning. I was in sweats and had no intention of getting dressed until we had to leave to go to dinner at Ma and Pops’.

“Colt?” Molly called from the other room.

I watched a batter swing and miss a curveball. “Hmm?” I called.

Maybe a nap would be good. If I could get my woman onto the couch with me, we could snuggle, yeah, fucking snuggle.

“Colt?”

“Yeah?” I called back.

She came across the room, stood before me in leggings and an old hoodie of mine and blocked the TV.

I’d rather look at her than baseball any day. When my gaze slid up her body and noticed the concern in her eyes, I sat up.

“What’s the matter?”

Our phones hadn’t rung. No chimes for texts. I didn’t get anything on the radio that something was going down where I had to respond.

She reached into the hoodie pocket and pulled out a white stick, like a weird pencil.

I blinked at it. Then popped to my feet like the couch just electrocuted me.

I grabbed the plastic stick, or a fucking pregnancy test and looked at it.

I had no idea what the pink lines meant.
I looked from the stick to Molly to the stick to Molly.

“Practice makes perfect,” she said.

“We’re–” I cleared my throat, my heart suddenly lodged up in it. “We’re having a baby? You’re pregnant?”

She nodded.

I dropped the test and grabbed her up, spun her around, then stopped suddenly.

“Sorry. Shit, sorry, are you nauseated?”

She laughed as I set her on her feet and cupped her cheeks. “No, I’m fine. Are you, are you happy?”

Was I happy?

“Holy shit, Mol. We’re having a baby. Of course, I’m happy. A little proud of myself.” I couldn’t help but smirk.

“Oh yeah?” She arched a dark brow.

“Yeah, my swimmers are that good.”

“I think we have to give some credit to my egg,” she countered.

“That’s right. We make the best things together.”

Taking her hand, I led her to the couch, pulled her down so we were snuggled face to face. I lifted her leg and set it over mine.

Then I kissed her. This. Molly. A baby.
It couldn’t get any better.
